ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT OF ARCHITECTS IN RURAL AREAS

With limited resources and ingenious ideas, Romanian architects mobilize to preserve landscapes in the Danube Delta, save villages from depopulation in Transylvania, or oppose an open-pit mining project. The latter attracted global attention due to the risk of destroying a community (Roșia Montană), which is on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger. Preserving vernacular heritage and designing architecture that harmoniously integrates into its environment requires strong engagement in these rural territories. These projects, whose construction methods adapt to local conditions, help reconfigure local communities and also have a significant impact on the development of slow and responsible tourism.

A conversation between Stefan Bâlici, President of the Romanian Order of Architects, and Joanne Vajda, architect (École nationale supérieure d’architecture Paris-Malaquais – PSL).
