FESTIVAL CINEMA OPENING OCCIDENT, BY CRISTIAN MUNGIU (2002)

Occident intertwines the destinies of three characters whose lives are connected without their realizing it—a surprising way of linking events. Their three stories ultimately converge in a cemetery. In Romania, life offers little, and everyone wants to leave the country. Beyond its biting comedy and dark humor, Occident is a story about emigration and those left behind.
Cristian Mungiu’s first feature film, selected for the “Quinzaine des réalisateurs” in 2002. It has never before been released in theaters.
