Laura Nicolae is a Montreal-based writer of Romanian origin. She recently published Rue Escalei [Escalei Street] with VLB Éditeur in Montreal, a work awarded the 2024 Robert-Cliché Prize for a first novel. The book depicts a community living by its own rules on the margins of the Romanian capital and the upheavals of the 20th century. Her characters and recurring themes reflect both Eastern European cultural roots and the postmodern experiences of French and North/South American literatures. As a member of the Union of Quebec Writers, Laura Nicolae has been invited to participate in several roundtables, book clubs, and literary fairs. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Bucharest and a doctorate in literary studies from Laval University, and she teaches French literature at the college level in Montreal.
