A LOOK BACK AT THE BIOGRAPHY OF A STORYTELLER

Born in 1968 in Iași, Cristian Mungiu is a polymathic figure whose inspiration spans cinema, literature, and visual arts. As director and screenwriter of all his films, he has, since Occident (2002), explored both the intimate and collective fractures of a society marked by its communist legacy. Honored at Cannes with the Palme d’Or (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, 2007), the Best Screenplay Award (Au-delà des collines [Beyond the Hills], 2012), and the Best Director Award (Baccalauréat [Graduation], 2016), he combines rigor with deep humanity. As a writer, he has published 7 scenarii and Une vie roumaine [A Romanian Life] (trans. Laure Hinckel, Marest), giving voice to his Bessarabian grandmother. As a visual artist, he also presents the exhibition Cristian Mungiu: The Biography of a Storyteller, shown as part of the festival. This exceptional conversation delves into his sources of inspiration and the fertile dialogue he weaves between artistic mediums.
