BETWEEN BUCHAREST AND PARIS: A SHARED JEWISH HERITAGE
From the late 19th century, several Jewish figures, already active in Romanian cultural life, settled in France. Most fled antisemitism or sought professional and personal opportunities denied to them in Romania. Among them were linguists (Lazăr Șăineanu), historians (Elias Schwarzfeld), artists (Tristan Tzara, Victor Brauner, Isidore Isou, Idel Ianchelevici), writers (Paul Celan, Benjamin Fondane, Gherasim Luca, Ilarie Voronca), philosophers (Serge Moscovici), and actors (Maria Ventura, Jean Yonnel, Nadia Gray). Historians Felicia Waldman and Anca Tudorancea will discuss the lives and works of some of these prominent figures, in Romania and later in France, highlighting the obstacles they overcame and the contributions they made to both cultures, weaving enduring links between them.
