SURVIVING EXILE

A conversation with Gabriela Adameșteanu, one of the leading voices in Romanian literature, about her novel Fontaine de Trevi [Trevi Fountain] (translated by Nicolas Cavaillès, Gallimard). Letitia, who has settled in France, returns to Bucharest to deal with an inheritance and is confronted by the memories, choices, and regrets of those who stayed behind. Between memory, exile, and the longing for freedom, the novel also features young Claudia, tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain — a symbol of hope and unfulfilled dreams. A delicate and lucid exploration of legacy, transmission, and the search for meaning across generations.
