THE SECRET VILLAGE
Writer Susanna Harutyunyan is a leading voice in contemporary Armenian literature. Her novel Le village secret (Les Argonautes, 2024), translated from Armenian into French by Nazik Melik Hacopian-Thierry, won the Presidential Prize for Literature in 2016. In this work of raw beauty, an isolated Armenian village offers refuge to those persecuted during the genocide. This hidden village is ruled by charismatic Harout, until the arrival of a pregnant young woman, carrying the child of the enemy, challenges his rigid stance. Through images both dark and luminous, fascinating details, and majestic landscapes, the novel blends the harsh realism of a nation’s suffering with the poetry of legends.
