« SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS » BY SERGUEÏ PARADJANOV (1965)
Ivan and Marichka, both from a Goutzoul community in the Carpathians, love each other despite the irreconcilable hatreds that divide their families. Marichka suffers a fatal fall, leaving Ivan in despair. Though the years barely ease his grief, Ivan eventually succumbs to the advances of Palagna and agrees to marry her. While Ivan shows her nothing but disdain, Palagna, nonetheless, attracts the desires of Yourasik, the village sorcerer. Shadows of forgotten ancestors is an adaptation of a short story by Ukrainian author Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, titled The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, published in 1910.
