TRIBUTE TO ARTAVAZD PELECHIAN’S CINEMA
Artavazd Pelechian was a laborer before turning to cinema. He left his native Armenia in 1963 to study at VGIK in Moscow, where he earned an astonishing and exceptional triple degree (documentary, fiction, and television) in 1971, marking his unconventional approach to filmmaking. Although his work was little seen outside the USSR until Perestroika, it gradually gained international recognition thanks to passionate advocates such as Jean-Luc Godard, Serge Daney, and Leos Carax. The program includes three short films: Les Saisons (1975) is an epic depiction of the daily life of an Armenian peasant community, aligning their relationship with nature to the rhythm of the seasons, intriguing audiences with its acrobatic shots. Notre Siècle (1982) reflects on the race to the stars that characterized the 20th century, where the utopia of Icarus’s dream transforms into a frantic technological race. Vie (1993) celebrates the moment of birth through images of women in labor and newborns.
