Robert Guédiguian
Born in Marseille, Robert Guédiguian is of Armenian descent on his father’s side and German on his mother’s. To name just a few titles from his impressive filmography: Marius and Jeannette (1997), The Last Mitterrand (2005), Journey to Armenia (2006), and more recently And the Party Goes On (2023). It is through the working-class neighborhood of L’Estaque that he examines the history of those he calls, in reference to Victor Hugo, the "poor people": workers, employees, small business owners, the unemployed, and the marginalized. He has been selected 7 times in Cannes, 3 times in Venice, and twice in Berlin. Gloria Mundi (2019) won the Best Actress award at Venice. His penultimate film, shot entirely in Africa, is titled Twist in Bamako (2022). The release of his 24th film, La Pie Voleuse, is expected soon.
