ON THE ROAD TO NAGORNO-KARABAKH

Hovik Afyan, born in 1983 in Abovyan, is the author of short story collections and novels. Rouge, translated from Armenian by Anahit Avetissian, was released in October 2024 (La Peuplade). It has been selected for the European Union Prize for Literature. After twenty-three years of marriage, Aram the painter and Arous the dancer travel to Nagorno-Karabakh. On the road, they discover the lifeless bodies of two children—a Armenian boy and an Azerbaijani girl—a sight that will reignite their inner turmoil. To tell the story of these new Romeo and Juliet, Hovik Afyan takes us on a whirlwind of horrifying dramas, improbable pigments, and redemptive dances.
