« SAYAT NOVA » BY SERGUEÏ PARADJANOV, PRECEDED BY « GIRL FROM MOUSH » BY GARINÉ TOROSSIAN
Sayat Nova tells the life story of the Armenian poet, from his childhood to his retirement as a monk, culminating in his death in 1795. The film transcends mere biography; it serves as a visual exploration of artistic inspiration. Through a series of symbolic tableaux, it elevates the unique way the poet perceives and transforms the world.
Serguei Paradjanov is an extraordinary figure who left a significant mark on the history of cinema. Celebrated by international critics and cinephiles alike, he was persecuted in the Soviet Union. Four years of forced labor, followed by multiple incarcerations, could not stifle one of the most original voices of his generation.
The screening will be preceded by the film Girl From Moush (1993, 6 min). Inspired by myths and oral traditions, the filmmaker imagines Armenia as represented in her subconscious—a sensual and cubist collage imbued with nostalgia.
The session will be presented by Patrick Cazals, filmmaker and journalist.
