Areg Balayan

Areg Balayan, born in 1980, is a visual artist and photographer living in Yerevan. Since 2009, he has been in charge of the agency "PAN Photo" in Nagorno-Karabakh, which has given him multiple opportunities to document the war in the region. His work has also been published in Al Jazeera, The Washington Post, and others.
Through the documentary series "MOB" (Military Mobilization), created during his service in the Nagorno-Karabakh army in 2016, the artist reflects on the disasters of war through the lens of both the photographer and the soldier. The camera thus becomes an ambivalent instrument, capable of creating an emotional distance between the event and the spectator while simultaneously “reproducing” the brutality of the world.
