Hamlet Hovsepian

Hamlet Hovsepian (1950 - 2022) was one of the most important figures in the contemporary Armenian art scene and a pioneer of video art in the Caucasus region.
He worked with films and videos since the early 1970s. During his stay in Moscow from 1978 to 1980, he was influenced by the city’s avant-garde and continued to incorporate elements of it into his work. After returning to Armenia, the artist settled in his hometown of Ashnak, just outside Yerevan, which served as an experimental laboratory for him "as a front against societal norms and the pacified rules of conduct." There, he created conceptual cinematic works characterized by absurd simplicity, abstract space, and extended duration.
