Teni Vardanyan

Born in 1958 in Yerevan, Teni Vardanyan is a painter and illustrator. Canvas and paper are her preferred mediums, and the human figure is her subject. Tirelessly, the artist brings to life her inner world, populated by timeless and enigmatic characters of indeterminate gender. The truncated, stretched, and sometimes intertwined machine-like bodies are rendered with transparent washes in clay-brown or pinkish tones reminiscent of latex. Against monochromatic backgrounds, they engage in uncertain actions—mysteriously introspective, possibly transgressive—either alone or in groups, evoking, while highlighting the ambiguity of desire, the fragility of the human condition.
