Achot Achot
Achot Achot was born in 1961 in Yerevan and now lives in Paris. The multidisciplinary artist emerged on the Armenian art scene in the late 1980s as a founding member of the group 3e étage (1987-1994). He is the creator of one of the first Armenian experimental films (The Angel Gabriel, 1990) and has also worked as a director and screenwriter for the theater.
His conceptual and existential explorations led to the creation of Afactum. This neologism, coined in 1990 from the Latin term factum (action, fact) combined with the privative prefix "a"; allows Achot Achot to place his work beyond the socio-cultural contexts that might be attached to it. Since then, the concept has applied to all his works: painting, photography, installation, video, and performance, blending art and life. Each subtitle indicates a mood inspired by Vedic writings.
His pictorial practice revolves around the repetition of an original form as a form of meditation and spiritual exploration. The series created using imprints consists of the repetition of the same shape soaked in paint until it fades away, blending manual dexterity with primitive gestures. The intuitive composition flows naturally, balancing repetition and variation, creating universes in a meditative form.
